Complete Photo Solutions Digital Photography Contest Judging Criteria

1. Balanced Composition
a. The photo should be balanced in composition by use of the Rule of Thirds or another compositional principle. Move into the right position to take your shot. Make sure the horizon is
level, and make sure to eliminate any extraneous elements in your photograph.

2. Use of Lighting

a. Is your photograph well lit or do you have distracting shadows? Have you used available lighting creatively, or added lighting to create the appropriate mood?

3. Artistic Eye and Creativity

a. The judges will be looking for an artistic eye; how well the photographer makes use of the “unique and the unusual” and what creative techniques and/or interesting effects are used. Be creative and notice the right moment and perspective for your shot.

b. The judges are also looking for artistic treatment; the use of unique colors and qualities found in light, and the use of graphic elements such as lines, patterns, shapes, and forms.

4. Sharpness

a. Photographs are evaluated against traditional standards of sharpness. Above all else, the picture needs to be in sharp focus. Any photograph that features some blurriness, must clearly be an intentional, artistic use of blur by the photographer. Photos that suffer from camera shake or other focus mistakes are usually eliminated very early in the judging process.

5. Exposure and White Balance

a. Does the photo show pleasing colors with clarity and correct exposure? Can you make out the details in the shadows? Clarity and resolution of the photo, as shown in the details of an image is very important. The judges look at how well exposed the image is and how well color is captured and displayed.

6. The Story Behind the Photograph

a. What story does your picture tell? This is one of the things that sets photography apart from shooting snap-shots. If your picture doesn’t capture some kind of story, why take it?

7. Technical Aspects

a. Your photograph must be at least 300 dpi and submitted in JPEG format to be considered in the contest.

b. You should especially be careful to not overly compress a JPEG file when saving. We recommend uploading images with the least amount of compression as your connectivity can allow - if you are on slow connection, you may not be able to wait for a big file to upload. In any case, settings above 8 (or 80% or the equivalent in your software) are generally safe.

c. Give your photograph a name. It is important to title your artwork.

8. Meeting the Contest Theme Requirements

a. Does your photograph meet the theme requirements set for the current contest? Theme requirements vary from contest to contest. If the entry does not meet the theme criteria set forth at www.completephotosolutions.com/contests.html for the current contest, the entry will not be considered. (i.e. If the current theme is landscapes, and a portrait of a baby is entered, it wouldn’t be considered for the contest.)
